What is stored when a page is viewed

One counter per page type per day. That is the entire record, and these are its columns in full:

• id
• day
• page_type
• views

A page view increments views for (day, page_type) — where the page type is one of 9 fixed words, never the address you visited. There is no user column, no session column, no IP address, no user-agent string and no referrer, so two readers cannot be told apart in this data and a single reader cannot be followed across pages. The count is sent by your browser after the page renders and the response sets no cookie.

Why collect it at all: to know whether anyone reads the site, and which kinds of page they read. That question can be answered with counts, so counts are all that is kept.

If you create an account

What an account stores

An account exists to send you the daily digest. It stores your email address, the tickers and members on your watchlist, and whether the digest is switched on. Sign-in is by a single-use link sent to that address, so there is no password to store and none is ever asked for.

If you receive the digest, we record which send you opened and which links you followed, so we can tell whether the email is being read. That measurement is tied to the send, not to a profile of you, and it stops the moment you unsubscribe — the link is in every digest, and using it needs no sign-in.

The limits

What we never do

We do not sell or share information about you. We embed no third-party advertising or analytics trackers — the counters above are first-party and are the only measurement on the site. We do not build a profile of your reading, and the data we keep is not capable of supporting one.

To remove your account and its watchlist, use the unsubscribe link in any digest or ask us at the address in the digest footer. See also the terms of use and the corrections policy.
